Released in the summmer of 1999, Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace was the most eagerly anticipated movie in film history. The first Star Wars movie since Return of the Jedi in 1983, the fever built up around it was to a level never before seen in Hollywood, and matched only by the critical and public mauling it received once it was released. The writing and direction from George Lucas and some of the characters (mainly Jar Jar Binks) were the main targets of criticism that still remains today.
We’ve revisited the film now, more than two decades after its release and many Star Wars films later, to see how the movie now holds up.
